Aboriginal Beginnings

The Story Behind The Painting –“Aboriginal Beginnings” is named because of the influence of aboriginal imagery in my work. When I was in grade 5 or 6 my teacher took my class to see an exhibit of First Nations work at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, BC.At that time the First Nations artifacts and items were displayed in the lower floor of the Parliament Buildings. I remember a lone rattle snake in a glass aquarium where visitors threw coins. I felt sorry for the snake. I remember after viewing the exhibition getting back to school, riding my bike home chanting to myself as I peddled, “I wish I was an Indian, I wish I was an Indian…….!”This painting freed me up to allow myself to use such imagery in my paintings.As a youth I was also impressed by Craft Cards that used to come in Shredded Wheat promoting “Straight Arrow” – an indian comic book hero of mine. His comics and cards taught kids how to build things in the native way. Read More...

The McLean "Steam" Sawmill is the only steam-operated sawmill in Canada. My daughter Joy performed here for three or four summers with Tin Pants Theatre Group. Et Tu Arbutus

The Story Behind The Print – Reflections – Et Tu Arbutus - My Brother, Wayne Pecknold was a true hero to me. He died of cancer at 60 – When we were about 8 or 9, my Dad taught us how to make a sling shot. Wayne’s was the best. It was made from an arbutus tree. It was in the shape of a Y, so my Dad had Wayne put a small piece of wood into the Y. He then showed Wayne how to use inner tube tire rubber to bind the two ends together, and he “kiln” dried it in the oven. It was perfect. This print, a variation from one of my photographs clearly exhibits the wonder and beauty of the wood. The same wood that Wayne used for his first sling shot.

The photograph that this Reflections Print mirrors has been here extended . Using some Software designed by the artist and programmed by one of my brilliant former students "Reflections" are created. By repositioning the key elements of the painting I can create about 16 new views. This particular tree was under some maple trees, the sun blocked the arbutus tree's growth, so it "fought back" and created some very celtic configurations!

Folded 2

The Story Behind The Print – Folded 2 - Folded 2 emerged from a series of prints based on photographs of the aluminum press plates which are still used by newspapers and printers. These plates are used to print the pages of newspapers and magazines and the like. Frequently, after they are used they are sold to the public for use as water-proofing the tops of pilings used in installing piles for wharves and docks. I am intrigued by the fact that they are often hammered or stapled onto the piling with the previously used ink-side down. I am fascinated to know what story or stories and photographs lie hidden on the hidden side? Often as I process this series, I am thrilled to see subliminal (hidden) imagery emerge. What do you see? Reflections Gifts

The Story Behind the Print – Reflections Gifts - Reflections Gifts emerged from an original ink drawing which I drew in 2005 while on a one week film school experience at Gulf Island Film and Television School on Galiano Island. It became the first print I did using self-designed software conceived by me and programmed by a former student. The original drawing is drawn on an 8 ½” x 11” sheet which has thereafter been multiplied and fitted to create an imagery which is a favorite of mine. Read More...

Russian Winter

The Story Behind The Print – Russian Winter - Russian Winter emerged into a series of prints containing whiteness and emotion. This particular print is named in honour of a former student of mine who was born in Russia and happened to be an orphan. She was adopted into a Canadian family. The original photo was taken in Parksville, BC on March 4, 2006. The White in this print reminds me of the snow in the film Dr. Zhivago (1965), which was shot in the cold Russian winter. I have allowed this image to become the signature piece for my work. Read More...
